A very interesting lead weight for an Alexander tetradrachm
Lot 2751
KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Weight of 1 Tetradrachm (Lead, 27 mm, 17.88 g, 12 h). AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right. Somewhat rough, otherwise, good fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This interesting lead weight was apparently cast in a mold taken from two Alexander tetradrachms. This and the weight suggest it was used to weigh the countless Alexander tetradrachms of Attic weight that flooded the eastern Mediterranean and the Levante following the minting of the vast captured Persian silver treasures by Alexander and the Diadochi in the 320s-280s BC.
